词的初期极尽艳丽浮华，流行于市井酒肆之间，是一种通俗的艺术形式，五代时期的《花间集》就很明显地展露了词美丽绚烂的文采，但是这期间的词题材还仅限于描写闺情花柳、笙歌饮宴等方面，可以说还显得很“小气”。 虽然艺术成就上已经达到了相当的水准，但是在思想内涵上层次还不够。

宋代初期的词一开始也是沿袭这种词风，追求华丽词藻和对细腻情感的描写。像曾因写过“忍把浮名，换了浅斟低唱”而得罪了仁宗皇帝的柳永，郁郁不得志，一生就流连于歌坊青楼之间，给歌妓们写写词。

所谓“凡有井水饮处，即能歌柳词”。当时的词被认为是一种粗俗的民间艺术，不登大雅之堂，以至于宋朝的晏殊在当上宰相之后，对于他以前所做的词都不承认是自己写的。

宋朝的艳妓之多，水平之高为其它朝代所罕有，她们和宋朝的才子们一起共同推动了词这一新兴艺术形式在民间的广泛流传。 但是，随着词在宋代的文学中占据越来越重要的地位，词的内涵也在不断地充实和提高。

“人不寐，将军白发征夫泪。”奠定了边塞词在宋词中的地位，使只闻歌筵酒席、宫廷豪门、都市风情、脂粉相思之类的世人一新耳目。
